Call Boys Incorporated – Perfect Trouble (CD2068)

Computer, electronics, saxophone and guitar in real time. Call Boys Incorporated is a quartet founded by Austrian composer and electronics pioneer Wolfgang Mitterer, with saxophonist Klaus Dickbauer, guitarist Gunter Schneiderand Günther Selichar on electronics. Perfect Trouble was recorded in May 1988 at Studio Spinnerei in Bad Vöslau, Austria.

The album has three long pieces: “Take A” and “Take B”, each about 20 minutes, plus a “Bonus Take” of more than 15 minutes on the CD. This is music for open ears. Electronic textures, computer sounds, reeds and guitar build dense, constantly changing sound worlds somewhere between free improvisation, noise, electroacoustic music and experimental jazz. The pieces don’t follow fixed songs. They develop as the four musicians react to each other, sometimes quietly and spaciously, sometimes in powerful sound masses.

The Side Story

After his duo album Obsoderso with Wolfgang Puschnig (CD2044), Wolfgang Mitterer started founding new bands from 1986 on, crossing jazz, new music, folk music and noise. They included the Pat Brothers with Linda Sharrock (CD2052), Hirn mit Ei, the Dirty Tones with cellist Tom Cora, and Call Boys Inc. Mitterer had studied organ in Vienna and electroacoustic music at EMS in Stockholm, and today he’s considered one of Austria’s leading composers of electronic and experimental music.

The Call Boys stayed together for years. In 1993 Mitterer wrote “Call Boys Inc. III”, a 50-minute piece for saxophone, guitar, prepared piano and percussion, created together with Selichar, Dickbauer and Schneider. Perfect Trouble shows where it all started.
