Sunny Murray Trio feat. David Murray – Live at Moers Festival (CD1054)
On June 3, 1979, drummer Sunny Murray, a free jazz pioneer known for his work with Cecil Taylor and Albert Ayler, played the 8th International New Jazz Festival in Moers. With him on stage were David Murray on tenor saxophone and bass clarinet, Malachi Favors of the Art Ensemble of Chicago on bass, and Cheikh Tidiane Fall as a guest on congas.
The result is free jazz with plenty of drive. Sunny Murray doesn’t keep strict time. He builds waves of rhythm and colour that carry the band, while a young David Murray plays with fire and urgency. Fall’s congas add an earthy, African-rooted pulse. The album has four long Sunny Murray compositions, each giving the group space to dig in and stretch out. It’s a jam session in the best sense: spontaneous and intense, and recorded live on stage.
Produced by Burkhard Hennen and released on Moers Music, the label that grew out of the Moers Festival. When you buy here, you’re buying directly from the label, and we only sell originals.
