Bobby McFerrin & Vocal Summit – Sorrow Is Not Forever – Love Is (CD)

This live recording comes from November 26, 1982, when Bobby McFerrin and Vocal Summit played the New Jazz Meeting at the Neues Schloss in Mainz, Germany. Years before “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” made him a household name, McFerrin was already showing what made his voice unique: improvisation, rhythm, and an almost instrumental range that moves freely between jazz, free music and groove.

He’s backed by an outstanding band: Rainer Brüninghaus on keyboards, Werner Pirchner on vibraphone, Barre Phillips on bass and Joe Chambers on drums. The eight tracks range from playful miniatures like “Conversations Junior” to extended improvisations like the ten-minute-plus “Chant for Five”.

The concert was recorded by Joachim E. Berendt, Burkard Hennen and H.W. Wunderlich and released on Moers Music, a label known for European and American avant-garde jazz. When you buy here, you’re buying directly from the label, and we only sell originals.
